HAZID Study
High-level hazard identification for projects in FEED and early design stages.
Request This ServiceWhat is a HAZID Study?
A HAZID (Hazard Identification) study is a high-level, structured workshop conducted at early project stages — typically during concept design or Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) — to identify major hazard categories before the design is committed.
Because HAZID is conducted when project decisions are still fluid, it is the most cost-effective point at which to identify and address potential hazards. Changes made during FEED typically cost 10–100 times less than equivalent changes during detailed design or construction.
The HAZID technique uses structured prompt words to systematically consider hazard categories including fire, explosion, toxic release, environmental impact, structural hazards, and operational hazards. Each hazard is risk-ranked, and actions are assigned to the project team for resolution in subsequent design stages.
What We Deliver
- HAZID report with full workshop minutes
- Comprehensive hazard register covering all identified hazard categories
- Action log with responsible parties and target closure dates
- Risk ranking matrix for all identified hazards
- Design-stage recommendations for the project team
Who Needs a HAZID?
Projects in FEED or early detailed design stage where major hazards need to be identified and mitigated before engineering is committed. HAZID is particularly valuable for new grassroots plants or major expansions.
Our Approach
Preparation
Review available design documentation, process descriptions, plot plans, and applicable legislation and standards.
Workshop Facilitation
Structured team workshop using prompt word methodology to identify hazard categories systematically across all process areas.
Risk Ranking
Each hazard is assessed for likelihood and consequence using a risk matrix; high-priority items are flagged for immediate design action.
Reporting
HAZID report issued with hazard register, action log, and design recommendations for follow-up in detailed design.
